We left Flam, via fjord cruise, in the afternoon. These are photos from the cruise, but they just don't do it justice. It is breathtakingly beautiful. What the photos don't really portray is the fact that you are surrounded by this view -- it is not just ahead of you, it encircles you 360 degrees. And then you realize that the walls of these cliffs extend far below you as well, probably at least as far down as they are up. In fact, we were on the longest and deepest fjord, and at some points, it is one mile to the bottom of the water. So, probably the water is deeper than the cliffs towering over us here. It was a gorgeous day and very warm. But the wind whipping off what we assume was pretty cold water made for a cold cruise. Good thing we had sunshine on our side so we could really enjoy!
When we arrived at Gudvangen, we got on a one hour bus ride to Voss. What I didn't realize is they were taking us on a "scenic" route which included the steepest descent in Europe. In a huge tour bus. You are lucky you are seeing these photos. I myself couldn't bear to look out the window. I just pointed the camera in the direction of the window and hoped for a photo that worked. 13 hairpin turns. Did I mention we were in a giant tour bus? I kept willing everyone to stay on the left side of the bus so as to weight us heavily on the mountain side instead of the cliff side of the vehicle.
I'd say this is the view from the bus about halfway down the mountainside. Good lord, we are still pretty high up.
Ellie sat with Ben and made it through this portion of the bus ride with no problem. But it caught up with her somehow, and by the end, we were sitting on the floor with her with a bag at the ready for her unsettled stomach. Then we got on a train headed for Bergen, and she fully recovered to her spunky self.
